There are two aspects of Pokemon that make it what it is today.  These aspects are simply the television show and the video game.  These things, combined, made a great team of entertainment.  Then they got greedy and just started making up slop for marketing purposes.
The video game was cool.  The cartoon, well, it was okay.  As the cartoon progressed into a new season, a new director took over and made the cutsey moral learning pokemon we all see today.  It used to be "let's kill some monsters".  Now it's "what did we learn today kids?"  That was the next few seasons.  Then, when the craze started to die down, they created something new.  NEW POKEMON.  They are evil reborn.
I, Danslaughter, being a seasoned Pokemon veteran myself, believe I can properly take you through this trip down memory lane, and a view of the future pertaining to Pokemon.  For the record, I have seen the show, but stopped watching after I watched about five Season 2 episodes.  I came back one day turning on the t.v. and watched a Johto League episode and once again reminded myself why I left the franchise.  I have played Pokemon Red, Blue, Yellow, Crystal, and seen Silver and Gold being played.
Without futher adeu, here is a quick lay-down to educate those who are not wise in the history of Pokemon.

SHOW
Season 1
Action packed, and Pokemon actually get hurt pretty bad.  You see strategy taking place using all the elements that the Pokemon world gives you in the game.  Watching this show is actually good for someone who would like to learn the aspects of Pokemon battling for the many Pokemon games.
Season 2
Pokemon no longer hurt each other to gain status.  Doing nice things makes you respected and famous.
Season 3+
Lame, soft, lame, soft on crime...
Who knows what season, but the Season of Johto League
This is the series w/ the new pokemon.  It's extra kiddy and extra cheesy.
I like to watch a show where there is some strategy to what they are doing.  A show where you can watch and know what's the best thing for the characters to do, because you play the video game and you know the world very well.  And nine times out of ten they'll do that because they are smart characters.  Not a gay multitude of living room furniture duking it out with no rhyme or reason to their existence and lacking the total sense of strategy all together.  I'll die before I enjoy this new show.

GAMES
(in order of appearance)
Pokemon Red and Blue(originals)
Good strategy.  Nothing like the show.  Show is based on concept of game much later after the game comes out.  Let me get that out now so people don't say, like some idiots, "Oh!  The show is kiddy, why would I want to play a kiddy game?  Doy!  Duh!"
Pokemon Yellow
Cheesy spinoff based on show.
Pokemon Gold/Silver
New Pokemon?  This can't be good.  Or can it?  Nope, just checking.  The new pokemon, 100 of them to be exact, look like the writers looked around the room and started turning household objects into Pokemon. It's bad. I don't see why there isn't a Couch-o-mon. I mean they got a sheep, a tree, and many multi-colored looking freaks that might as well be couches.  At least then the colors would make sense as to why they were on a Pokemon.  And where did the strategy go?
Pokemon Crystal
NooooOOOo!!!  A re-hash of Gold/Silver with just a few tweaks.  For one, a girl trainer is for the first time available to all those cute female Pokemon players.  I felt a dire need for a girl character from the beginning.  I mean girls raise Pokemon in the game and show, too!   And they make em all cute and squishy.  I just die seeing them raise those little rascals.
